I live.
I don't know how many people might have been worried about me, but I wanted to let everyone know that I made it safe and sound out of the Chalmette High School shelter mom and I stayed at, and we're currently staying with relatives on my uncle's side of the family. Granted, I don't know if mom and I have a home to come back to, but we made it out okay, we're alive, and we're just trying to let this all sink in and adjust to where we're going to go from here.
To be honest, I couldn't wait to get to a computer to let my friends know that I've been doing okay, but God... Oh the story I could tell of how I got from home Sunday afternoon to today...but for now, let me jist this so I can try and log a longer LJ where I feel freer to write a longer post..
Saturday: Boarding up the windows at home.
Sunday: Left for the Chalmette High School shelter, took my drawings, luggage of clothes, and other important documents, Katrina was coming ashore.
Monday: At about 4:30 A.M., the electricity went off. We slept that night, woke up that morning, and at about a little after noon, the water began to top the levees and St. Bernard began to flood. Thankfully my family had been on the 2nd floor the entire time, but people were moving up to the second floor. Katrina passed over, and my cousin and my uncle went out to save people who didn't leave and were stranded on rooftops.
Tuesday: Blur. Rations were passed out to the people who were in the school, and those who were saved from St. Bernard Parish began to fill the gym at Chalmette High School, which was separated from the main building because the first floor had completely flooded. This was about the day we found out that St. Bernard had taken in about 12-15 ft of water. My car was totally submerged. (Though my trunk was open, might be a thing about Saturns as I found out later,
hellcat's gift was in my trunk, I wish I had taken it out) I ran into
misharra and was so terribly glad to have a friend there. That day, I helped him fan his mom, my cousin saved their dogs, and plans were being made to take the Special Needs individuals away from the shelter elsewhere. Didn't happen until Wednesday morning, even though Parish officials stated that they'd have them there that afternoon.
Wednesday: People began to move from the shelter, up until the last trip at about 1:00. Mom and I stayed with my aunt because she was staying with Mr. Warner, and they didn't want to leave their animals (as they might have been told to do from the ferry to get to Algiers, and risk their loss of life) and also because the school was literally his livelihood. (This runs pretty deep, and as silly as others might say this is, you have to be a St. Bernardian to fully understand) So, we stayed after, cleaned up a bit, and the Fire Department and the Sheriff's office kept us safe and protected and, believe it or not, blessed us with steak dinners for the next two nights. ^_^
Thursday: Realizing the relative futility of staying behind and cleaning up, the people we stayed with were making plans left and right to find ways to get us all out of St. Bernard, and they were falling apart. Not too much happened today, aside from settling on a plan that evening that changed the next morning, but...
Friday: A 5 hour tour! We went from Chalmette High School (very scenic after all the damage from Katrina) down to the Violet Canal to try and get a boat to take us across the river. Instead, we got back where we started (in Chalmette) and the Wildlife and Fisheries Dept. helped us get out of St. Bernard. We went through Violet Canal to Bayou Bienvenue, caught buses off of Paris Road, saw the damage within New Orleans, stopped at the Elmwood Mall in Jefferson, had boxed lunches (The cold water was just heavenly at this point..) and rode with the Chalmette Medical Center crew who were heading to Jackson to leave elsewhere. We went through Baton Rouge, came to Lafayette, and about 2:00 Saturday morning, we were picked up by those aformentioned relatives and came here about 3.
Saturday: Today. Mom and my aunt and uncle and others headed over to State Farm to do what they could to report the losses and find out where to go from here. Currently typing the LJ, but still quite tired, but the breakfast was highly appreciated...
And that's a jist of what's happened so far. Like I said, I don't know if mom and I have a home to go back to, college is virtually over at UNO, and I'm still waiting to see about my job over at the LSU Health Sciences Center. Still don't know what we're ultimately going to do, but when I can, I'll update you guys. My check hasn't come in, I've got about $12 to my name, and I don't feel so grand about doing this, but if anyone wants to donate anything for mom and I, my Paypal is connected to my bank account, with the address:
navybluecrystal@yahoo.com
Anything would be appreciated. But I am safe, tired, and definately in a blur, but hopefully things'll still turn out okay.

Date: 2005-09-06 06:06 am (UTC)We came out of the storm not too badly damaged. I got a nasty gash just above my knee while moving a Giant CVS sign out of the middle of the road. the wind caught it and tried to pull it out of mine and sly's hands.
We lost the roof to one of the buildings on our farm, and a little leakage, but that's it.
I guess Isfa made it okay, since we saw him at MFM this weekend.
