I BRING YOU.... CAKE!!

Remember that splodegasmic fit of inspiration I had a few nights ago? Well, I got all the supplies ready and made my first ever fondant cake. XD Here's how it went down.

I got two 12" round, 2" high cooking pans. A huge box of fondant. Eggs, oil, food coloring, confectionary sugar. And another box of cake mix and some gelatin for added strength. (Funfetti, if you must know.) And a mat to see how much fondant I had rolled out already.

Step 1: It's a Piece of Cake to Make a Pretty Cake. XD
Made the two funfetti cakes on Saturday night after getting all of the supplies in. Nothing special here. The only difference was that I added gelatin into the mix, which turned the funfetti into a pink color. After they were made, I let it sit in the fridge overnight.

Step 2: Prepare the Patient for Fondant
Buttercream time! Made my first batches this afternoon and was amazed at how easy it was. Let butter soften and mix in confectionary sugar, spoon by spoon, until it's fluffy, sweet, and easy to spread. In total, I used about 8 oz. for my head. After I carved out the outsides into the shape I wanted, I stacked on some excess cake to help bring out the muzzle.

Step 3: Cover with Sugar and More Sugar
It gets better. I rolled out a large block of fondant, covered my head...and it actually looked like I was suffocating myself. XD I patted the sheet against my head until it was pretty flush, and then cut away the excess, which I ended up using for parts and details. In truth, I only experimented with the nose by adding coloring a toothpick at a time and rolled it between my hands like taffy until it was well spread throughout the nose. Next time, I think I'm gonna carve out my pieces, roll them back into the ball, flatten them, cut them out again, and use them on the head. Pretty tasty stuff too - but that could also be because of the confectionary sugar I was using to make sure it didn't stick to any surfaces. :3

Step 4: Paint and Complete!
VODKA. I never thought I'd ever use this, but it was useful today to help 'cut' the food coloring for use painting the fondant. It did give it a sort of watercolor sheen (as I was told it would) but it worked out relatively well. I do wish it was as uniform as the nose, but for a first cake, I really don't think it's bad at all. (Although I did look a little more warrior like with all the food coloring I still have on my skin XD) After it was all done, I used water to 'glue' the pieces together. Recorded a video, took photos, and made an LJ for all to see. XD

And, as far as I'm aware, I don't think I've seen ANY cake related 'furry' art (though I did search, and there are a few isolated things - nothing like this). Animal fondant/gumpaste/carvable chocolate maybe. But not like mine. XD Maybe I could start a trend of sorts. Could be fun. :3

Yeah, shared it with my roommates a few nights ago, and my co-workers yesterday. For humor's sake, I took a few more photos of what was left of the cake:

Was a real hit too. A bunch of people were saying, "Do you watch Cake Boss or Ace of Cakes?" And my aunt was once again trying to get me to peddle this as a profession. :3P ...like with anything I do well. XD
